McColl moved to Orange this week and will start presenting request program the Mike McColl Show from FM107.5’s Kite Street studio on Saturday from 1pm.
A lover of radio since his teens, McColl started his own show at 2RDJ in Burwood in the early ‘80s.
“I was doing my program one afternoon and people were ringing through and they were saying either they were from country towns – I thought someone was playing a joke because community radio has a low-voltage transmitter,” he said.
“Unbeknown to me, the Community Radio Network had patched my program across Australia.”
McColl attributed the show’s popularity to its resurrection of ‘50s to ‘70s music.
“I attempt to re-create what radio used to be back in the ‘60s,” he said.
FM107.5 president Matt Bryant said many listeners had turned to community radio for the variety.
