Where do you work and how long: Self-employed since 2010.
Job title: Mediator.
What’s your job description: I help people make agreements that work. I mainly deal with family law matters, workplace disputes or cases referred by magistrates.
I get a huge buzz out of helping people solve their conflicts and make agreements that let them have a functional relationship in future.
Where were you born: Sydney.
How long lived in Orange: Six years (this time).
What are your hobbies: Renovating and reading.
What did you want to be when little: A vet.
What other jobs have you had: Stakeholder relations manager on infrastructure and resources projects, restaurant manager, antique dealer, publicist.
What training have you done: Two Masters degrees (Peace and Conflict and Dispute Resolution), a Graduate Diploma in Family Dispute Resolution, and national mediator accreditation.
Why did you choose this job: I get a huge buzz out of helping people solve their conflicts and make agreements that let them have a functional relationship in future.
What is the best thing about your job: Helping parents make parenting agreements that always put the best interests of the children first. In workplace mediations, I love seeing people take back control of the conflict and make agreements that make work a good place to be.
What is the worst thing about your job: There’s no downside to helping people put conflict behind them, make agreements that will work and get on with their lives.
Where do you see yourself in five years: Doing much more mediation. People are starting to realise that it’s better to mediate and stay in control of the outcome. When conflict situations get out of hand, people lose control and someone ends up forcing a solution on them. When people sign an agreement they came up with themselves, they are much more likely to stick to it.
What advice do you have for anyone considering this job as a career? The training is a big investment but absolutely worth it.
