Orange High School is one of the worst, particularly in Coronation Drive, with kids wandering across a pedestrian crossing one at a time, banking up eastbound traffic as far back as Frost Street and across the roundabout on Summer and Woodward streets.

Eastbound motorists on Coronation Drive have now worked out an easier passage by using Frost, Kenna and Moulder streets and Waratah Avenue to avoid the shemozzle outside the school.

It’s not much better in Woodward Street, with kids continually pressing the walk buttons on the two sets of traffic lights and crossing – again – one at a time.

In the afternoons they’re everywhere like ants, dozens of them ignoring the lights and just wandering across in front of traffic wherever they like.

Probably because it’s a high school and the kids are supposed to be mature. Maybe that’s why there aren’t lollypop controllers like other schools where the traffic is more orderly. Maybe it’s time they were introduced.

And with Christmas coming, the Anson Street ‘Brown’s Cows’ block already has some of the worst traffic problems in Orange with one or two wandering across that fool pedestrian crossing holding up cars half way to the hospital.

Most drivers don’t realise, or don’t care, the block is also a 40km/h zone. Few take notice.

WHAT’S the media’s obsession with politics? People generally are sick and tired of polly-waffle every day in the newspapers and on radio and TV. The most annoying is probably the know-all talk-back radio mob who go on and on and on and on every day.

The comments from some of them makes a good case for people having to sit for an intelligence test before being allowed to vote. Donkeys they call them, don’t they?

And there’s those painful polls every second day, and with elections not until next year, just think what it’s going to be like when the campaigns officially begin.

THE high bluestone kerbing still in parts of central Orange are icons from the past, but they’re also tailpipe busters for cars.

There’s huge scrape marks in the footpaths where drivers have backed too far when parking, and no doubt their mufflers have similar damage.

Bluestone kerbing and guttering was first put down in the centre of Orange back in the 1870s even before streets like Summer, Anson, Peisley, Kite and Byng were sealed.

It’s long gone in most parts, but there’s still lots around, and probably it should be heritage listed to preserve it from being replaced by concrete.

It’s part of our history and as far as drivers flattening their muffler tips, they’ll just have to be more careful parking.

IT’S surprising how many people you see walking our streets with a garbage bag picking up rubbish.

It’s probably just as surprising the number of grubs who chuck mostly takeaway rubbish out of their cars.

So our clean streets are mainly due to these caring, anonymous people who pick it up every day or so on their walks.
