Personnel from Central West Police District, NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Ambulance were involved in the search, which also included Police Rescue and POLAIR resources.
According to police, Mr Middleton called triple zero at about 6pm on Monday.
He stated he was in the Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area, and was lost and dehydrated.
Police held concerns for his welfare as they and emergency services started the search for him in the forest.

Meanwhile, Bathurst police have located a young boy who went missing on Monday night, but have renewed calls for help to locate a missing teenaged girl.
Police held concerns for the Khi Tremain’s welfare, as he required regular medication and did not have his personal belongings or medication with him.
Chifley Police District Inspector David Abercrombie said he was located safe and well on Tuesday morning.
However, they are still calling for assistance in locating a 14-year-old girl who was last seen by her parents two weeks ago.

Her parents are worried about her and need her to return home to Oberon.
She is around 145 centimetres tall, has a light brown complexion, brown eyes and a nose ring.
