The side was beaten in its tournament-opener but shrugged that 4-3 loss to Metro South West 4 aside, dropping just one more of their remaining preliminary games to finish the round robin stage in second and qualify for the decider.
Orange 1 knocked off Orange 2 (6-2), Metro South West (7-nil), Goulburn 2 (3-2) and Bathurst (5-4), but were beaten 3-2 by Illawarra South Coast, the side that went on to beat them in the decider as well.
The side, made up of David Wynne, Adam Hurford, Rob Laffin, Tom Simmonds, Peter Hanlon, Steve Longhurst, Mathew Showels and Quentin Anderson, fought hard but suffered a 5-2 loss in the decider.
Orange 2, a side featuring Robert Carroll, David Cowan, Steve Horan, David Milne, Wayne Newton, Daniel Patterson, Scott Shepherd and Ian McAlister, suffered four other preliminary stage losses on top of that derby with the eventual runners-up.
They also fell at the hands of the champions (3-2), Metro South West 4 (7-4), Bathurst (9-4) and Goulburn (5-2), but held Metro South West 3 to a 1-all draw, that helped ensure they didn’t claim the wooden spoon.
Nepean reigned supreme in the top division, going through undefeated, topping their pool and then beating New England 6-2 in the decider. The women’s open indoor championship is this weekend.
