The four workmates Codey Roach, Clinton Blackmore, Mathew Reynolds and Ben Thompson got their craft, the Soar-sage Sizzle, to fly about 17 metres at the Red Bull Flugtage event in Sydney on Saturday.
It was just short of the 22 metres achieved by the winners, whose craft was based on a giant rogue seagull.
Mr Thompson said two months of work was destroyed in just 10 seconds.
“Everything was falling with style,” he said.

“It is something we will be able to tell the grandkids, how we flew a sausage sizzle into Sydney Harbour.”
He said that if they did it again they wouldn’t put as much time and effort into the craft considering its ultimate watery destruction.
They are all workmates at Plaztech Industries.
The winning craft, from a Sydney crew, beat the previous distance record set in Sydney, 20.5 metres, which was set back in 2010.
However, the world record is 78.6 metres set in California in 2013.
