Director of community services Scott Maunder said the dam wall had been identified as a potential risk for collapse and concern had been raised for flooding of the Shiralee subdivision.
Mr Maunder said water would be pumped from the dam and private contractor Ian Dixon would be tasked with capturing the fish and keeping natives alive.
He said the cod and trout would be relocated to the Department of Primary Industries’ dam opposite the Orange hospital and the introduced species would be euthanised.
“We do lots of serious stuff at Council – this was a bit of fun for the community,” he said.
Mr Maunder said they expected the Shiralee subdivision to be completely redeveloped to include 1900 house lots and a village shopping centre in the next 5-10 years.
