Workmates Codey Roach, Clinton Blackmore, Ben Thompson and Mathew Reynolds have entered the Red Bull Flugtag birdman rally on Sydney Harbour.
They are among 40 finalists for the contest and have built the Soar-sage Sizzle, based on a sausage sandwich.
Mr Thompson said after a last-minute hitch they were ready to take the plunge.
“On Monday we realised we had a problem with the wing material we had planned,” he said.
They wanted to use parachute material for the wings but paint didn’t take it to it so they had to swap to heaps of clear film normally used to cover books.
He said limited testing had them hopeful the craft will work. “We know it can get some lift,” he said.
