After causing somewhat of an uproar behind the barriers, Cameron Crockett’s Lucy Legacy produced an almighty run to salute at Towac Park on Friday afternoon, winning The Oriana Orange Maiden Handicap (1300 metres) at relative outsider odds of $7.

The Mudgee trainer’s four-year-old held off red-hot, $1.90 favourite Cortesta, from 2017 Golden Slipper-winning trainer Gary Portelli’s stable, and Orange trainer Brian Gentle’s debutant Exterminate ($11) to win in a photo.
Jake Pracey-Holmes was on board and, from barrier seven, worked Crockett’s mare around the field three wide to take the lead at the 800-metre mark.
The duo never gave that lead up despite Peter Stanley’s Narrow Neck Nelson, which finished fourth, getting a beautiful run and Cortesta looming large in the straight.
Portelli’s favourite was somewhat unlucky in being forced to the outside lane in the sprint and almost got there, but Pracey-Holmes and Lucy’s Legacy found an extra push in the dying stages.
“She’s a bit mad this horse, like me and the owners,” Pracey-Holmes laughed after the win.
“Once she was in the barriers, the barrier boys did a great job because she’s got her quirks. I think she’s got a lot more to give this horse, she kept switching off during the race but it was a good win and I think there’ll be a lot more to come.
“Really pleased to get the win for Cam (Crockett) too.”
Pracey-Holmes picked up a win for Cam’s father Max in the very next race too, steering McKellar’s Love ($6.50) to a strong win in the Spanline Class 3 Handicap (1400 metres).
