A group of ladies from Cudal have been hard at work for more than four years crocheting and knitting 620 poppies which feature in a poignant display which will be at the centre of the village’s Armistice ceremony on Sunday.

The figure of 620 has significance, representing a neat fraction of the 62,000 casualties in World War I, which ended a century ago.

Alice Hazelton, one of the project’s spearheads, said the design was a labour of love.

“Poppies are an important symbol of Remembrance Day and have become a way to remember those who lost their lives in the war,” she said.

“Many of the veterans who served still have descendants living in the area and this artwork means that the community of Cudal will be better able to appreciate their shared history.”

The blanket will be formally unfurled at the Cudal War Memorial site on Sunday.
