Play was delayed due to rain from Friday night’s storm, but if anyone thought that would mean a spicy wicket like the one which played havoc between CYMS and Centrals last week they would have been sorely mistaken. 

One stage Cavs were 1-292 in the 53^rd over as Cook (157) and Ferguson (110) led the way to the mammoth total. 

Cook hit 21 boundaries in his brutal innings, which he said was the highest score he’d ever made in any game – in backyard cricket right through to seniors.

“It was good, finally getting some runs,” he said. 

“I’ve been hitting them well this season but last year was a bit of a shocker … I’m just seeing the ball better and enjoying it a bit more.”

It’s no surprise the 18-year-old enjoyed Saturday’s dig – as well as plundering 157 runs, he was able to bat most of that innings with 17-year-old Ferguson. 

“We’ve played cricket for ages and know each other through hockey so it was good fun having a hit out there,” he said.

“It was pretty easy out there batting with him, he knows how I play and I know how he plays so we just go off one another.”

He said Ferguson was hitting the ball well straight, while Kurtz – with whom Cook shared a 164-run stand – also batted well. 

“After the storm last night I thought it might have been a bit tacky but it turned out to be pretty much a road, poor City had to bowl for it,” he said. 

In the other ODCA game, Kinross put themselves into a strong position after rolling Centrals for just 136 from 60 overs after the hosts had been 2-96, losing their final eight wickets for 40 runs after Stu Crisp and Gus Cumming took five wickets between them. 

However, the students also struggled to get going to the bat as former Kinross star Fletcher Rose took 4-22 to leave them at 4-69 in reply, with Max Powell on 23 not out and Phoebe Litchfield unbeaten on 12.
