The students joined about 76,730 pupils around the country to undertake the compulsory two-part test.
Student Paris Capell said after a difficult start on Thursday, the second part of the English exam was a pleasant surprise.
“The first exam was definitely harder than expected. They changed the structure of section one so it was hard to know how to time manage,” Paris said.

Year 12 coordinator Ben Shore said “very hard” was the feedback from most students after part one of the English exam.
“Today [Friday] everyone seemed a lot cheerier,” he said.
He said more students than ever plan to take a gap year, with Samuel Mackie, Jed McRae and Bek Ritchie all taking a year off to travel and work.
With Samuel planning on studying aerospace engineering, Jed planning on a career in primary teaching or psychology and Bek pursuing medicine, they all agreed they needed a break.
Only Paris was looking at university next year, hoping the next fortnight of exams will earn her a spot to study a double degree in international security.
“Today was more straightforward than Thursday, but my hand is pretty sore," she said.
James Sheahan had 120 year 12 students this year, with all but one ill student ticking English off their exam lists this week.
