Cavaliers and CYMS kicked off their 2018-19 Orange District Cricket Association campaigns in perfect fashion on Saturday afternoon, the former hammering Centrals at Jack Brabham 1 and the latter grinding out a tough win over Kinross at Wade Park.

Cavaliers’ 92-run win was led by the side’s top order, before boom recruit Mitch Black cleaned up with the ball, while CYMS found a somewhat unexpected source of inspiration in wicketkeeper-come-finger-spinner Adam Smith.
After Tom Belmonte (65) led the green and golds to 9-158 from their 50 overs Kinross were in great shape in the chase, Will Luelf (28), Andy Litchfield (23) and Alex Brien (24) had pushed the students to a reasonably strong position at 3-63 in the chase.
The Smith struck.
First he removed Brien before snaring four more scalps to finish with excellent figures of 5-33, his fifth wicket was Kinross’ penultimate scalp and left the students all but dead in the water at 9-128.
Harry Kermode (16) and Ed Taylor (1) did fight hard for the last wicket though, pushing Kinross to 144, but Belmonte picked up the latter with his one and only ball of the day to secure CYMS’ win.
“It was a really good way to start the season, the effort was great and I actually thought Kinross played really well too, it was a tough win,” CYMS skipper Chris Novak said, the victory was the perfect way to kick-off his first season in charge of the side.
“Belmo batted really, really well. It was chanceless and it’s good to see him score some runs early in the season, he’s a guy that’s come through juniors at our club and hopefully he can score plenty more this season.
“Smithy, well, he just bowled really well. There was a bit of turn there but he put it in the right spots and the batters made the mistakes.”

Novak did concede he’d have liked his side to pile on a few more than 158, but couldn’t be too hard on his troops considering the result.
“A few batters probably didn’t get the runs they would’ve liked, but it was the first hit-out of the season and we got the win. I’m sure we’ll just get better from here,” he said.
Cavaliers rocket to the top of the standings thanks to the win combined with last week’s washout draw, they nip ahead of CYMS on quotient.
After Matt Corben won the toss and batted at Jack Brabham Ryan Kurtz (47) and Kaleb Cook (67) gave their side the perfect start, adding 97 for the first wicket.
The latter added another 48 with Corben (59 not out) before he was dismissed with the score at 143.
Although the maroons did lose 4-2 through their middle order, they managed to work their way to 219, which proved more than enough as they skittled Centrals for 127.
Black did the bulk of that damage, taking stunning figures of 3-8 from his 10 overs, which included five maidens.
The only real bright spots for Centrals were Fletcher Rose’s debut figures of 4-52, and Matt Tedeschi grinding his way to a hard-fought 48 under a lot of pressure.
