Sydney chef Enrico Sgabossa showed about 20 children how to make pizza dough with nothing but flour, water, salt, oil and yeast.
Under Mr Sgabossa’s instructions, that left 20 students with hands sticky from dough – including Ryley Simmons, Annabelle Foster and Jacqui Whittaker.
The three were excited to make pizza bases, with Ryley a big fan of the pizzas.
She said mixing the dough had been her favourite part, because “I like getting my hands dirty”.
Annabelle also enjoyed mixing it, “because it’s fun to touch it”.
Jacqui enjoyed having dough-covered hands, and she enjoys baking with her mum at home, meaning she was a dough-rolling expert on Saturday when making pizza at the market.
All three friends have a firm pro-pineapple stance on their pizza, with three ham and pineapple pizzas to be made from the girls’ three dough bases.
Mr Sgabossa, who is a professional pizza consultant, said he was proud to be able to come back to the Central West – he worked in Cowra for years – to teach children about the relationship with food.
“I’m lucky, you say if you like what you’re doing you don’t work, that’s my thing, I love to bring the connection between food and pizza, with a mindful way to have people and produce meet,” he said.
“I love to be here today … the kids learning, learning to get in touch with food because now we lose the connection with processed food but I wanted to step back and get the younger generation to get on top of food.”
