Robert Glover was found guilty of escaping from lawful custody, taking a car, and driving while disqualified, meaning he will be released in 2022 after he faced Orange Local Court on Thursday.
Glover reportedly escaped from the minimum-security facility at 6am on October 10, and made his way from St Helliers Correctional Centre in Muswellbrook to Gunnedah, where he stole a Nissan Navara and drove to Orange.
That trek is a 539 kilometres, and would take over six hours by car if taking major highways.
It’s unknown how Glover reached Gunnedah, which is over two hour’s drive north of Muswellbrook, and Central West Police District Chief Inspector Peter Atkins was unable to comment on how the man escaped the corrections centre.
He was arrested in Orange after Central West police received information that he was in a carpark in William Street, not in Byng Street as initially reported by police.
He is believed to know people in Orange and “had some ties to the region”.
Chief Inspector Atkins believed the man was in jail due to “property-related offences”.
Police urge anyone with more information to contact crime stoppers on 1300 333 000.
