Police and other emergency services were called to the scene of the incident – which involved a Pantech truck, a Toyota Landcruiser utility and a Mazda CX9 sedan – near Tichborne, between Parkes and Forbes, at about 1.30pm.
Their initial investigations suggested the driver of the utility, a 56-year-old woman from Grenfell, had slowed to a complete stop to turn right from the highway into Watts Lane.

The driver of the truck, a 21-year-old man from Orange, was also travelling south when his vehicle collided heavily with the utility.
Due to the force of the impact, the truck veered into the northbound lane and collided with the Mazda, which was being driven by a 42-year-old man from Victoria.
The utility was propelled some metres before coming to rest on its side on the side of the road.
The drivers of the utility and truck were taken to Parkes hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, while the driver of the Mazda was uninjured.
Firefighters cleaned up a diesel spill on the highway that resulted from the incident.
The highway was closed and traffic control measures were in place during the recovery of the vehicles.
At about 4pm, Live Traffic reported that one lane had been opened to traffic, with normal access resumed at about 5.30pm.
Police investigations are continuing.
