Fusion Australia team leader for Central West NSW Malcolm Rankin said it was more than just moving to a new school.
“They were at the top of the school, but when they come to high school they are at the bottom,” he said.
“They wonder ‘how do I fit in? In some cases they don’t know anyone else at the school.”
To assist the new year 7 students cope with the demands Fusion Australia is conducting two day workshops on peer support and leadership.
About 40 Orange High School year 9 students have participated in two-day workshops to enable them, as year 10 students next year, to be able to help and support the new students.
“It’s about being able to be there for the other people,” he said.
“Being able to listen, being able to encourage and give some feedback too.
“[It’s about] how to work through an issue when there’s been conflict.”
He said Canobolas Rural Technology High School students would be undertaking the workshops next term.
Mr Rankin said he had seen some students sitting by themselves at school which was difficult for them.
“You should feel part of the group,” he said.
“This two day workshop is to help students develop awareness and skills with peers in their school community.
“Students learn how to care for those who are friends, peers and those younger students to assist in developing a community of care at school.
“It will give understanding and empower in relationships.”
Mr Rankin said there was an emphasis on group interaction.
“The educational process is engaging with group activities that are fun and challenging,” he said.
“Facilitators are skilled in youth work and group dynamics.”
The workshops have been conducted on Monday and Tuesday over the past two weeks.
He said he had been impressed by the reactions of the students. “The feedback from the group, most of them have said it was good to fantastic,” he said.
