Before you think they all might be ‘a snag short of a barbie’ you need to get straight to the sauce.
The four Orange workmates have entered the true blue Aussie icon in a birdman rally.
They are going to build the sausage sandwich craft, named the Soar-sage Sizzle, based on a model they are currently testing.
Roach and three workmates, Clinton Blackmore, Ben Thompson and Mathew Reynolds, have entered the Red Bull Flugtag event to be held at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair on the harbour on November 10.
They are among 40 finalists for the Flugtag, which means flying day in German, out of an initial 500 entries.
Each team will create a comic craft and attempt to fly, or fall, into the water from a six-metre high flight deck.
The only form of propulsion is the pilot's three mates who can push the craft for up to 30 metres.
Mr Roach said they were stunned to find out their entry had been accepted.
“It’s brand new for all of us,” he said.
“It was just a funny idea to begin with.”
Mr Blackmore said they came up with an iconic idea for their craft featuring a sausage sandwich with tomato sauce, mustard and onion.
“We wanted something as Aussie as we could get and straight away we thought of the snag,” he said.
They have built a 65 per cent scale model before creating the real thing.
“I’ve been working on trying to get it to fly and put it through some simulations,” Mr Blackmore said.
“Whether or not it flies can come down to how fast we can push it.”
He said they would likely make the Soar-sage Sizzle out of light alloy and parachute material.
They also plan to use corflute to create a napkin on which the giant sausage sandwich and its high-flying pilot will sit for takeoff.
And while they won’t be able to test at the event site they have other plans.
They are looking at dragging it behind a car on a property to see whether it will lift.
If it does work Mr Roach could be soaring into the sky.
If it doesn’t, he can expect to make a swift splash.
The Flugtag competition has some unique rules.
They include the team must not be under the influence of alcohol or indeed be suffering from a hangover.
It has been eight years since the event was last held at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.
The event website says the world record distance is 78 metres set at Long Beach, California, in 2013.
However, the teams are judged on more than just distance.
They also receive points for the creativity of the craft and showmanship.
