According to information from the operator, 43 stallholders attended the event, four of them from the area.
They included 20 food outlets, 11 dessert outlets and 12 arts and crafts stalls.
On the Friday night, an estimated 3500 people attended, based on the number of meals served and rubbish generated, with 2500 on the Saturday night.
Orange City Council considered a report on the wrap-up of the event on Tuesday night following concern from tourism organisations about the Sydney-based concept.
Councillor Stephen Nugent asked what information was available on income generated, money into Orange and accommodation bookings.
“Were some of those 6000 people from out of Orange and did they come here specifically for the event?” he said.
“Was there any anecdotal evidence about any impact, negative or positive, on local cafes and restaurants over that weekend?”
Mayor Reg Kidd said different events appealed to different people.
“If we can have another event in Orange, even if it doesn’t attract outside visitors, it’s good,” he said.
Councillor Kevin Duffy said he supported both homegrown and imported night market formats, and more of them.
“I think it’s very good, and we’ve said it a number of times in this chamber, that there’s something for families to do,” he said.
Councillor Tony Mileto said he was also interested in the money generation.
“Nobody’s trying to downplay that it was successful, but it’s in the public interest to know those figures,” he said.
Acting general manager Mark Burdack said council staff would set up a methodology to assess future events independently.
