The ensemble will perform at Orange Regional Conservatorium at 7pm on Monday, October 22, as part of its Notturno: Music for the still of night, regional tour.
The title Notturno means night and reflects the evocative and sometimes dreamy mood of the music presented and features the unusual combination of guitar, flute and strings.
The ensemble showcases chamber music from the classical period with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and some of his guitar-playing contemporaries: Luigi Boccherini, Anton Diabelli and the Bohemian composers Johann Kaspar Mertz and Wenzel Matiegka.
At times, the ensemble breaks into small clusters to highlight various instrumental colours and then finally play as a tutti ensemble for an arrangement of the lilting Pastorale from Boccherini’s famous Fandango guitar quintet.
The musical program for this tour has been curated by the Brandenburg’s principal flute player, Melissa Farrow.
Other musicians will include Matt Bruce on period violin, Marianne Yeomans on period viola, Jamie Hey on period cello and Tommie Andersson on period guitar.
The ensemble of Brandenburg soloists, is primarily made up of the Brandenburg Orchestra’s section leaders, making it ideal for regional touring and performing in flexible and intimate settings.
To make the instruments period appropriate, the string instruments for this program use strings made of sheep gut rather than steel strings, which are normally used in a modern orchestra.
The Notturno: Music for the still of night regional tour will also include a performance at Young on Saturday, October 20, Blackheath, Tuesday, October 23 and Singleton on Wednesday, October 24.
The group’s name pays tribute to the Brandenburg Concertos of JS Bach.
The concert will run for about 80 minutes.
