Jack Evans Workwear and Camping celebrated the milestone this month, now run by Mrs Evans and husband Murray, Jack’s grandson.
Mrs Evans said the business had moved with the times, moving away from army disposal in favour of workwear, and it had been a privilege to work with the business.
“We hope our predecessors would be happy with what we’re doing and it’s good to show a local family can be in business for that long,” she said.
The business opened in September 1948 across the road from its current location, between what is now La Porchetta and Central West Prestige, before moving in the early 1950s.
Mr Evans’s father, Ted, ran the business until his passing and uncle, Peter, stayed until his retirement in 2008.
Fresh look
IT still has the trendy and affordable stock the business is known for, but Kmart’s Orange store has undergone a dramatic transformation.
The revamp has been under way for the past fortnight and will be complete by the end of the week.
Operations manager Sam Ewin described it as big and bright.
“It’s amazing, the store looks like it’s doubled in size,” she said.
Ms Ewin said the layout was designed in a spiral, ending in the middle of the store where the cash registers could be found.
She said said the central location meant there was less congestion at the checkout.
Space to grow
BILL’S Beans has opened a warehouse to cater for the business’s expansion.
Owner Bill Parianos said he had simply “run out of storage” for the coffee roasting business and sought out the Gateway Crescent location.
“It’s completely new for us,” he said.
The warehouse will also contain a new roaster.
