About 70 Orange High School year 12 students and year 11 business studies students treated 116 Yeoval Central School students from kindergarten to year 12 to the respite day.
Among those who took part was Orange High School’s new captain Lucy Johnston.
“We wanted to just give them a day to get their minds off the drought and give them a positive day all round,” she said.
Yeoval principal Nicole Bliss gave a tearful thanks and said students have been coming to school tired as a result of their families dealing with the drought.
“The kids are doing it tough because the parents are doing it tough,” Mrs Bliss said.
“It’s not just the farmers, it’s the tradies who are not getting employed, the local businesses who are not getting the trade.
“For [students] to be able to forget about the drought for just one day is very special.”
Yeoval student Sydney Tremain helps on her family sheep farm along with her sisters, three of whom also go to the school, and said she was shocked by the generosity.
“My family really appreciate it,” Sydney said.
“We’ve always helped out as much as we can, [the drought’s] a struggle but we’re getting there.”
During the respite day the Yeoval students had the options of watching Chrisropher Robin or Crazy Rich Asians at Odeon 5 Cinema and 150 pizzas were bought for lunch.
Orange High School year 12 coordinator Kylie Winslade said the event was made possible through $8000, which was raised by a fundraiser planned by the year 12 and year 11 business studies students last month.
Money left over from Friday’s event was also given to the school to distribute among families in need.
“The whole school dressed as farmers for the day,” Mrs Winslade said.
She said there was also bush dancing and the year 11 business students set up fundraising stalls.
In addition to the $8000 raised by Orange High School Caringbah High School also raised $5000 for Yeoval Public School and Cabramatta High School will distribute money it raised through Orange High School.
