Orange CSU had the highest percentage of the campus donating between March 1 and July 1 at 13.5 per cent, receiving a trophy for its efforts.

The campus beat Port Macquarie CSU on 11.5 per cent and Dubbo on almost 10 per cent. 

The award for the highest number of donations went to Wagga Wagga, with 347 donations, followed by Bathurst on 218 and Albury on 105.

Orange came fifth in the count, with 88 donations.

SRC vice-president Jeff Guo lives with lupus and could not donate as a result, so he took it upon himself to support the blood drive by promoting it on the campus’s Facebook page at every opportunity. 

“I was encouraging people to come and donate and raising awareness,” he said.

“The national average for blood donations is 3 per cent, I’m just so proud that we rallied together.

“It’s all fun and games winning the trophy, but we get to donate so much to patients.”

A single blood donation can save up to three lives and one in three people will need donated blood in their lifetime.
