The couple have been behind J&J Brides and Formals since they moved to Orange after 15 years in a similar business in Brisbane.
“We decided we wanted an easier life, we’re both getting into out 70s and we think that’s enough,” Mr Coote said.
He said the pair stayed in the bridal business because it focused on individuals.
“It was something where we didn’t have to compete with Kmart,” he said.
“It’s more personal retail and you have more personal contact with customers.”
Mrs Coote’s skills with a sewing machine also boosted the business, according to her husband.
“If something doesn’t fit, Jeanette can make it fit,” he said.
In the mix
CHARRED Kitchen and Bar will take on the best in the state next week at the Restaurant and Catering Association NSW Savour Awards.
The restaurant has been nominated in the informal contemporary restaurant category, which owner David Collins said was a core part of the business.
“We try not to be too formal, we aim for serious food with an approachable dining experience,” he said.
Mr Collins said NSW wines were a focus and the restaurant had won awards for its wine list in the past.
It also recently launched a Thai-inspired lunch cart called B Side.

MBC will run a session at its Peisley Street office for those managing their own superannuation funds on September 18.
The 75-minute refresher session will take participants through their obligations and responsibilities, making contributions, managing investments, paying benefits to members, reporting and compliance.
It will be limited to 14 people and the $99 fee is tax deductible.

MBC co-director Chris Dwyer said it was important for self-managed super fund trustees to understand potential penalties.
“However it does not need to be difficult either,” he said.
