A police senior constable was hospitalised with burns to his face after he and other officers attempted to arrest the man, who was roaming the village’s streets armed with a burning container.
The man was eventually subdued, arrested and transported to Bathurst police station, with Bathurst Police Inspector Gerard Powell he is now facing charges of using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, three counts of assaulting police in the execution of their duty causing actual bodily harm, common assault, two counts of malicious damage and damaging property by fire.
“The man appeared before the registrar of Bathurst Local Court on Saturday and is under order for a psychological assessment,” Inspector Powell said.
Police earlier alleged the man had smashed the windows of both a Fire and Rescue NSW truck – which was initially called to the scene of the incident – and a police vehicle.
The senior constable was taken to Cowra hospital for treatment and medical checks, and was released on Friday.
