It is similar to one taken of Orange around the same time, and probably by the same photographer, that has just been donated to the Orange Regional Museum.
Photographer Robert Bruce said he had finished producing copies of both, with the Lucknow project far easier as the original was bigger and in a better condition.
The original and copies of the Orange work have been donated to the museum and Mr Bruce’s copy of the Lucknow image will also be displayed at the museum. However, Mr Bruce said the owner of the Lucknow original, who had it in his family, will retain the original and keep his identity secret.
“Maybe it was a family heirloom,” Mr Bruce said.

“We [the Orange and District Historical Society] knew he had it, we approached him and asked him about it, as we were doing the Orange one, and he agreed [to have a copy made].
“I was thrilled to bits to see it was in a much better condition.”
Mr Bruce said the panorama, stretching from looking west towards Orange to looking east along the main road, was taken south of the centre of town, probably on a mullock heap.
“This was probably almost the heyday. All the shafts seem to be working,” he said.
