DAY BY DAY: It was a baby’s one chance in 25 million

WELCOME: An unknown baby or a migrant became our 25 millionth citizen.

About 11pm on Tuesday night Australia’s population was to officially reach 25 million for the first time.

Which meant any baby born at Orange hospital at the time could lay claim to being that person.

But, proving it is nigh on impossible as they were not only competing with other babies born around the country, there was also the number of migrants arriving at our airports on the night – and the number of deaths to take into account.

The Bureau of Statistics’ population clock says our population is growing by one person every 83 seconds.

Still, if you were the proud parents of such a baby in Orange on Tuesday night you can consider you were part of history.
