Part-time comic Phillip Alexander will MC the first comedy night from his new Central West Comedy Club group at Waratah Sports Club on August 24, which Mr Alexander is hoping becomes a regular event every three months.
Comedian Daniel Townes, who has spent time on the ABC and on the comedy circuits in Melbourne and Sydney will headline the first show, while Sydney comedian Brett Nichols will support him.
Mr Alexander said he was hoping to line up local acts to support bigger-name comedians, with the aim to give local comics a chance to spruik their stuff and make connections in the comedy world.
“We’re going to be looking for locals to get up, but it won’t be an open mic night where anyone can have a shot … it’s hard to draw a crowd to those,” he said.
“I don’t know a huge amount of comedians in the Central West … but it would be great to get some people up for five or ten minutes.”
The nights are an addition to the comedy calendar in Orange, which includes Factory Espresso’s comedy nights which have run throughout this year, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow which visited Orange last month.
Five dollars from every ticket will also go towards drought relief for farmers, with the night to be named “funny farm”.
Mr Alexander said he was happy for farmers to contact him if they wanted to come along.
Tickets for the event will be available at Waratahs for $20 from Wednesday, and those looking to contact Mr Alexander to potentially tee up a slot on the bill should call 0401 526 427.
