The winner of Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Best Beer List Award in 2017 emerged from this year’s awards with recognition for its wine.
At a ceremony in Sydney, judges awarded the highest class ranking – three glasses – for the New Street restaurant’s list of 457 wines, while a public vote secured Charred’s win of GT’s Wine Readers’ Choice Award.
Charred manager and sommelier David Collins said it was wonderful to be recognised alongside the likes of Rockpool and Aria.
“To be on that list is pretty special,” Mr Collins said. “Unexpected.”
In its 25th year, Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards were created to recognise the talent of sommeliers as well as business owners commitment to quality wine lists and cellars.
Having gained certification at colleges including Sydney Wine Academy, Mr Collins said the secret of a good wine list is “passion”.
He said Charred’s success lies in its balance of supporting locals and benchmarking against great global wines to show how Orange stacks up.
