The Magpies backed up last week’s comeback win over CYMS with a gritty triumph over the Bears at King George Oval on Sunday, Cassidy one of five different try-scorers in black and white as Cowra secured another two points to move to within a victory of competition leaders Orange Hawks.

Cassidy’s first-half four-pointer takes his season tally to 12 tries in as many games, a total that sits the Cowra centre on top of the 2018 standings alongside two blues flier Jordon Baker.

Baker has been a long-standing member of Hawks’ backline on the right wing, which makes Cassidy’s position alongside him all the more impressive.

Cassidy has this season made the switch to the centres, at a new club, a move mooted by coach Steve Sutton after he reshuffled his backline to move Group 10 player of the year favourite Jeremy Gordon back to his preferred position of fullback.

Gordon is relishing the reshuffle, as is Cassidy.

“That’s a new position for me, it’s a bit of a change but I’m really enjoying it. It’s one of the best positions I’ve played,” he said.

“I seem to be more involved there in the centres, I’m getting my hands on the ball more and being outside Waz and Poss (Warren Williams and Josh Rainbow, respectively) means I’ve got more space to move.

“All the forwards get us on the roll on and the space is opening up.

“I think I’m enjoying it in the centres. Excited about it this year, playing with Waz and Poss. I don’t know what it is, but I’m excited about footy.”

Cassidy said Blayney, as has been the case all season, stuck with Cowra for the majority of Sunday’s round 13 clash at King George Oval, the score 18-10 in favour of the visitors at the break.

But the Magpies blew the Bears off the park in the second stanza, Joey Bugg and Gordon both completing doubles in the 22-point rout.

“We just managed a few more completions than them,” Cassidy said.

“They were in it, we knew from the start that’d be the case. They’ve got nothing to lose. They play the first 40 tough but unfortunately for them they fade a bit.”

Cassidy said this weekend’s game against Panthers shapes as a massive one for the club, with the men in black third on the ladder.

“They’ve got a big pack, if we can complete at 80 per cent, turn it around and play it in their half then that’ll go a long way to winning the game. We’ve got to hold the ball though,” he said. “We’ve started to gel together, the more minutes together the better we’re getting.”
