Author Dave Barry wrote “the worst part of playing golf, by far, has always been hitting the ball”, but there were several foolhardy linksmen who proved those words wrong at Duntryleague.

Despite the icy winds, persistent rain, and a maximum temperature that stubbornly refused to even approach double digits, several would-be pros and weekend hackers headed outdoors to complete their weekly competition rounds on Saturday.

Among them was a man wearing shorts.

“You don’t see that every day,” someone nearby remarked in disbelief.

Incorrectly, as it turned out, as the next group to walk off the 18th green featured two shivering shorts-wearers.
