A community appeal has been launched to help communities around Mt Hagen, Papua New Guinea affected by the 7.5 magnitude quake in February.
About 140 people died, but more than 270,000 need aid, especially access to clean water.
Sister Cities Committee member Chris Gryllis visited a Mt Hagen school during the Victorian bushfires.
“Even though these students didn’t have much money, they generously shared a donation of 500 Kina,” he said.
“I’m hoping the Orange community will dig deep.”
Committee chair Bryce Ostini said due to instability in PNG, it took a long time for the depth of the earthquake’s impact to filter through.
“While the media spotlight has moved on, the need of local communities has been forgotten,” he said.
Deputy mayor Joanne McRae said the council was pleased to support the appeal.
“This committee has an important role in keeping the council in touch with a broader focus,” she said.
Contributions can be made at Orange City Council’s cashier counter.
