Following a community meeting at Wentworth Golf Club on June 8 to discuss ideas, the group of 30 attendees elected to start Ploughmans Wetland Care Group.
Dennis Croucher was elected president, adding to his leading role with the Friends of the Botanic Gardens, while his wife Lindy Glover became secretary.
The couple have lived in the area for the past five years and regularly walk around the wetland.
“It makes it very neat if we’re both doing it together,” Ms Glover said.
The group already has seed funding from the former Wetland Action Group and a donation for a memorial seat.
“We want to make sure that happens quickly,” Mr Croucher said.
The group will be a sub-committee of the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange (ECCO).
Former councillor and committee member Neil Jones and said he was rapt with the turnout to the first meeting.
“There were five representatives from Oak Tree Village, which was pretty amazing,” he said.
Mr Jones said the group would seek to strike a balance between its environmental and recreational uses.
The committee will meet on the second Wednesday of the month at Wentworth Golf Club from 5.30pm, starting August 8.
The group will conduct letterbox drops to keep nearby residents informed.
