Across Australia people celebrated the shortest day of the year – which was Thursday – in a variety of ways, with some of the rituals bordering on the foolhardy, including plenty where people plunge their naked bodies into icy water.
But until Sunday, not too many of the rites – almost certainly none, in fact – had involved bicycles and an accordion.

Members of the Orange Mountain Bike Club found a unique way to preemptively mark the shortest day of the year on the weekend by pushing their bikes to the snow-capped peak of Mount Canobolas.
There, protected from the elements by only their clothes, a rudimentary corrugated iron shelter and some good cheer, they gathered to … dance to an accordian’s merry tune.
