Social media sociologist Peter Sutton said while the instinct might be to enforce an all out ban on certain technologies in order to protect children online, this method is rarely effective.
“Nothing beats face to face communication with your children,” Mr Sutton said.
“Establish boundaries around use early – in my house we started with Instagram and moved on to Snapchat, talking about appropriate use with each new app.”
The tech specialist and father of two will give advice on ways to use popular applications in the safest manner, with suggestions such as turning off location settings, in a series of talks at the NSW Regional Technology Expo on Saturday.
