Councillor Glenn Taylor questioned the suitability of Jaeger Reserve – home to Orange Croquet Club and located between Hill and Clinton streets – to house the station.
“I know up in that area there’s a number of houses that seem to use wood fires so it could give a reading that’s it’s polluted up there when the rest of the city could be fine,” he said.
The Office of Environment and Heritage will operate the station, providing real-time data on its website to inform asthma sufferers and other vulnerable people on poor air quality days.
It requested a typical site for Orange, including open flat land where buildings and trees would not filter or block fumes or other pollution.
Public submissions close on July 12.
Mayor Reg Kidd said the site would be useful to inform asthma sufferers and other vulnerable people on any poor air quality days.
