Council has identified a site next to the Orange Croquet Club’s field and the proposal is now on public exhibition for community submissions until July 12.
The Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) would install and operate the air quality monitoring station which would provide real time hourly data for the public on its website.
Orange mayor Cr Reg Kidd said the site would be useful to inform asthma sufferers and other vulnerable people on any poor air quality days.
And it could be used for school excursions.
“School students could be taken to it, it’s an open area for environmental trips,” he said.
“It is nice and central to Orange.
“It’s not all that far from new housing and it is in the middle of old housing to detect any pollution and smoke.”
OEH has offered to pay a lease fee of $2000 a year.
