Wood fires have always been a favourite throughout the Central West. Being rugged up next to a roaring fire, watching the flames flicker is a relaxing experience and brings back memories of years past. While many people think wood fires are outdated, the Australian Home Heating Association (AHHA) says contrary to what people believe, wood heating provides “deliver low greenhouse emissions and the smallest greenhouse footprint, with the cheapest running costs for domestic heating in Australia”.

Orange City Council says wood fires are a great way to heat your home and have several tips to make sure you get the best heating for your home while not damaging the environment.
- Only burn wood that is dry and untreated.
- Maintain a bright flame and don’t let fires smoulder.
- Ensure your chimney and flue are clean.
- Increase air flow when needed to stop fires smoking
A big focus is trying to source wood from renewable sources. Businesses such as Valley View Firewood Supplies source and deliver legal and renewable firewood in Orange and across the region. They provide solid and strong burning wood including red, yellow and white box, river gum and ironbark timbers.
While wood fires are popular, technology is certainly starting to take over. Ducted heating, along with reverse cycle air conditioning, are becoming increasingly popular choices to heat homes across the Central West.
John Young from Ideal Conditions in Orange has been installing and servicing heating systems since 1986. John said in floor heating options are ideal for our local climate. “Ducted heating and other in-floor heating options such as hydronic systems are great because they can heat single or multiple areas, and given heat rises are often the most efficient,” he said.
John also highlighted that gas as opposed to electricity is better for your budget with gas providing up to 350% better energy efficiency when heating based on energy consumption and heating output levels.
The latest technology that is really starting to make traction is smart heaters and climate control via smart devices. The ability to control and maintain temperatures in your home from your mobile phone or tablet not only increase your levels of comfort, but can also assist in keeping your energy bills down.
