Senior vice-president Chris Colvin of the Orange Returned and Services League sub-branch has called the theft of several war medals on Anzac Day this year a senseless act.
Central West District Police yesterday posted a photo of the stolen medals on their Facebook page and asked for information from the public to help them locate either the medals or the thieves.
In their post the police said the items hold “significant sentimental value”, words Mr Colvin echoed when he spoke to the Central Western Daily on Thursday morning.
“Sentimentally they’re irreplaceable,” Mr Colvin said.
“Medals have usually been handed down through families – it’s heartache going through the process of trying to get a new set.”
Mr Colvin said an original round medal will have the owner’s name engraved on the rim, while an original star medal will have the name printed on the back.
“If they try to sell them they’ll find people go ‘these aren’t yours’ – whoever stole them really has no idea.”
