That is the opinion of Snakebite Boxing Bathurst’s Jamie Fallon, a man who was the co-promoter of the novice titles which ran over two-days at Bathurst Panthers last week.
It marked the first time the event had been awarded to a regional centre, and Fallon feels Bathurst demonstrated why it is a trend which should continue.
“The venue at Panthers – it was always going to be a place that could cater well for this event. Those big double rooms you have up the top, you can’t even find that in Sydney these days,” he said.
“The venue easily held the crowd, they provided the security and the atmosphere was awesome.
“The hotels, accommodation in Bathurst, it can obviously cater for big events like the race [Bathurst 1000] so that wasn’t an issue either.
“So yeah, of course I think we could host this again.
“Naturally it has to go to other places, but it could come back around to Bathurst, 100 percent. Or we could get something even bigger like the Australian titles.
“That’s the next step up, the only step up for us now is the Australian titles after we’ve hosted the Australian Novice Titles for fighters with zero to five fights.”
If Bathurst does make a bid to stage another national-level event, it is not just the venue or accommodation options which will weigh in its favour.
Fallon pointed out the boxers who took part in the novice titles from visiting states such as Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania loved the city too.
“Everybody that came absolutely loved Bathurst, they all went up to the track and they said the club was the best venue that they’d ever been to an amateur boxing event at. That’s what the Victorians said,” Fallon said.
“The Tasmanian guys, they went to a local rugby league game – that was the first time they’d been to a league game and they loved it.
“I think Bathurst could easily host any Australian titles, we proved that and not just for boxing.”
