Gigging since 2013, 10th Man takes blues and hard rock into places rarely explored in the modern music era.
Originally formed to competed in the ABC Exhumed competition, it eventually won the local competition, defeating 12 other bands.
“That was for musicians that had proper jobs and it was a pretty fun competition,” band singer Ray Mjadwesch said.
“We’ve played 20-odd gigs in the last five years, so it’s not a living for us – we do it because we love it.”
Mjadwesch said the band is influenced by plenty of rock acts including Australian bands AC/DC, the Angels and Midnight Oil.
“Any good music,” he said.
“We’re influenced by a lot of blues based stuff, so we like other guys like Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.
“One of our guitarists is mad on Leo Kottke and that sort of finger-picking style.
“There’s a lot of influences that have come together.”
Mjadwesch said he’s looking forward to the gig on Thursday night and it’s not the first time they’ve performed at BMEC.
“It’s a fun night. We had one before and it’s a really great venue,” he said.
“It’s also good to get local acts performing and you’ll get a lot of local acts coming along.
“All our fans will be there.”
10th Man gig in Bathurst and beyond and play at all sorts of venues.
“We perform at protest camps, venues, parties, pubs and all over the place,” Mjadwesch said.
“We sing about things like coal mining in the Galilee Basin, historic events and historic people.
The band writes all their songs, with Mjadwesch saying some are “funny” and some are “a little bit ironic”.
Mjadwesch said the best way to get an understanding of 10th Man is to just come down to the gig on Thursday night.
The gig will feature songs from their forthcoming second album Anthropocene.
