The Scouts will join groups from all over Australia to brave the Autumn cold and head out under the night sky with their binoculars for a ‘Most people stargazing at multiple venues’ attempt.

Two of Cub Leader Nick Geoghegan’s three children, Abby, Luke and Rory Geoghegan will take part, he said the challenge will to get his big energetic group to stay still for 10 minutes.

“To qualify we have to all be still staring up at the moon at the same time,” he said.

“I think we’ll be a bit like Emperor Penguins huddled together to stay warm.”

More than 130 people are registered to be part of the Orange Scout group event at Camp Canobolas between 7pm-10pm.

Mr Geoghegan said to dress warmly, and remember to bring binoculars or a telescope and a chair or picnic rug.

The scouts ask everyone to bring a gold coin donation to help them replace their equipment shed.

“Bring some coins along, we will have some cakes to sell and all the money will go towards replacing the shed which looks as if it dates back to the early 1900s,” he said.

The current World Record, set in 2015 by the Australian National University (ANU), is 7960 people across 37 locations.

This year, the Australian Broadcasting Commission, in partnership with the ANU, has recruited groups around the country to beat that record.
