Just a week out from coach Brad Fittler announcing his side for State of Origin I, the race for the NSW playmaking spots appears to be a race between three.

Talk that Mitchell Moses could rocket into contention, despite Parramatta's woeful start to the year, has cooled.

It leaves Maloney, Cleary and Sydney Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary as the leading contenders.

Wests Tigers' No.7 Luke Brooks has been talked about as an option after finding consistent form this season for the first time in his career.

However he said he didn't expect to get a call from Fittler in the coming days.

"Personally I think they might go with Maloney and Cleary," Brooks said.

"But I'm not too sure."

Asked if he expect to be forced to wait another year to realise his Origin dream, Brooks said: "Probably. I think."

But for Brooks, 23, it's an honour just to be spoken about for Origin.

"At the start of the year it was probably the furthest thing from my mind but once you play some good footy, your name gets tossed around so it was a good feeling," Brooks said.
