The Salvation Army exceeded its Red Shield Appeal launch target of $20,000 at a charity lunch at Orange City Bowling Club.
A total of $21,145 was raised through one-off donations and the auction of several items, including a signed and framed Australian netball team T-shirt.
Economics editor of The Sydney Morning Herald Ross Gittins was guest speaker at the event ahead of the national door-knock which runs May 25-27.
The economics guru told the crowds he is from an ‘old army family’, as his father was a Salvo’s officer.
Mr Gittins said it was charity organisations such as The Salvation Army which provide the safety net for the poor, which governments can fail to provide.
“This budget will be very good in six or seven years time to highly paid people, but it has plenty in it that will make it very tough for the unemployed – the Salvos make sure these people don’t starve.”
