It joins the night markets as part of the Banjo Paterson festival, FOOD Week, Wine Week and the upcoming Winter Fire Festival, which will debut in August.
The Aussie Night Markets, which have been to Lithgow and Bathurst in recent months, will contain entertainment for children including a jumping castle, a type of merry-go-round, swings a glowsticks aplenty – as well as 30 food stalls and another dozen boutique stalls.
The stalls will be arranged around the edges of the space, with the middle open for tables, chairs, picnic rugs and entertainment.
However, the thing that makes it stand out from other markets in town is the event stretches over two nights – Friday and Saturday – and is also alcohol free.
Most of the stalls are from outside of Orange, and while some familiar names such as Trang Hue Vietnamese will appear, Aussie Night Markets director Sam Adams said very few Orange vendors had applied for a number of local slots in the market, and the ones that did applied after nominations closed.
“We’re a bit surprised so no-one applied, despite the call for more local options it didn’t actually translate to people applying,” he said.
“We were able to move some things around to get the locals in which was good.”
He said he was hoping people of all stripes would attend, including detractors of the market whose opposition to the event saw it debated by council last month, to see the market wasn’t “competing” for the same audience.
“We hope they come down and see it’s actually quite different, other markets are targeted towards the older generation, but we’re targeting families and younger generations who might want a night out without drinking,” Mr Adams said.
“If all goes well and everyone is happy we’ll hopefully come back.”
The Aussie Night Markets begin at 4pm and run until about 10pm on Friday and Saturday night at Northcourt, at the corner of Piesley and March streets.
Entry to the market is free, with $20 wristbands for unlimited rides and single tickets available. ATM on site.
