After the success of the 2017 Gun Amnesty the Central West Police District and the NSW Police Force are once again holding its gun amnesty.
Anyone with a firearm-related item or an unregistered firearm in their possession will have the chance to legally dispose, or register it without penalty, between July 1 and September 30, 2018.
Central West Police District’s superintendent Chris Taylor said this was an opportunity for people to hand the guns without fear of recrimination.
“We do know that there are a lot of firearms out there in the community that have not been registered at all and some that may have been registered and may have changed hands illegally,” he said.
“This is the opportunity for people to bring those in to the police and we will make sure they are destroyed.
“Any opportunity we have to remove illegal firearms from the community, we will take.”
Superintendent Taylor said people won’t have to worry about facing further police action after surrendering the guns.
He said the amnesty also removed the opportunity for criminals to get their hands on firearms through illegal activities such as break and enters.
Minister for Police Troy Grant said last year all Australian states participated in the National Firearms Amnesty and the response from NSW residents was outstanding.
“The NSW Police Force netted nearly 25,000 firearms from 7,277 individuals during the three month campaign,” said Mr Grant.
“Of those 14,745 firearms were registered, providing police with critical information on each weapon including the serial number and the owner’s details.”
Firearms and firearm-related items can be surrendered under amnesty arrangements at approved drop-off points, which include licensed firearm dealers, mobile stations, and police stations.
Under no circumstances should loaded firearms be taken into public places – including police stations.
