Although the Blue Heelers scored first, the Boomers worked their way to a 24-12 lead at the half-time break and then extended that to 16 by the full-time hooter, ultimately running out 40-24 victors.
Jacob Suthlerland opened the scoring for Cargo after just five minutes, with Matty Fuller’s successful conversion extending the Blue Heelers’ lead to six, but it didn't take long for the reigning premiers to hit back.
Ryan Porter grabbed a quick-fire, first-half brace to give the Boomers an 8-6 lead with 15 minutes gone and despite Cargo’s willing attacking play, Trundle diffused a number of raids and used that defensive momentum with ball in hand.
Brendon Sense crossed and then big prop Israel Symington dived over not long after, both were converted by Linc Taylor to push the Boomers out to a 20-6 lead with 10 left until the break.
Cargo hit back two minutes later through Blake Cramer and Fuller’s conversion cut the gap to eight, before Cargo’s goal-kicker was sin-binned.
Trundle score on the half-time hooter through Mark Coombs, and Cargo captain-coach Steve Lane was sin-binned at that point too, leaving the Blue Heelers with 11 for the opening minutes of the second half.
They held the Boomers out until the 47th minute though, when captain-coach Adam Hall crossed. The Boomers scored again when Blake Hartin found his way through, extending their lead to 34-12.
Lane and Fuller scored in quick succession to cut the gap to 34-20 with 15 to play, but the Boomers held on despite Cramer’s second of the day, a consolation try.
Despite the win, Hall was far from impressed with his side’s second-half effort while Cargo showed glimpses of the attacking play that took it to the grand final last year.
In the match of the round the Grenfell Goannas handed Manildra its first loss of the season, at Jack Huxley Oval to boot. The Goannas won a bruising encounter 32-26.
In last weekend’s other games Peak Hill scored a 32-20 victory over the winless Burrangong Bears, the Roosters’ first victory over 2018, and the Eugowra Golden Eagles pushed into fourth with a 40-16 triumph over the Condobolin Rams.
In league tag Peak Hill picked up its second win of the season, a 22-18 victory over Burrangong. Grenfell claimed the points over Manildra, winning 18-6 and Cargo continued its unbeaten start to 2018 with a 24-6 win over Trundle.
