The Gloria Jean’s coffee shop in Summer Street has shut its doors with its parent company announcing widespread closures across Australia.

Gloria Jean’s lease has expired and all equipment has been removed from the shop, which is part of the Orange Post Office.

A spokeswoman for Australia Post said it had a new tenant.

“We can confirm that we have a new retailer, Clever Owl, [a toy store] joining the Orange GPO complex in the site formally occupied by Gloria Jean’s,” she said.

On Tuesday workmen were renovating the store in preparation for the new tenant which was in the Orange City Centre and has relocated to Anson Street ahead of the new premises being completed.

The Retail Food Group [RFG] also runs Pizza Capers, Donut King and Michel’s Patisserie which have shops in Orange.

It announced major closures in its half-year annual financial report released last week.

“The company has determined that between 160 and 200 outlets of its existing domestic outlet network are unsustainable on a long-term basis,” it said.

“Subject to moderation of landlord rental requirements, due to unsustainable or above market rent expectations and declining shopping centre performance, these outlets will either be closed or lease renewal not sought on expiry, on or before 30 June 2019.”

It also announced a new-look for its remaining Gloria Jean’s and Michel’s Patisserie shops.

Gloria Jean’s will change to ‘fast, casual dining including an all-day menu and new hero products’ while Michel’s will be repositioned to emphasise “Michel’s French cafe heritage.”

RFG was contacted for comment about whether its Orange operations would be affected but it did not reply before the deadline.
