Canobolas Area Local Command Inspector Dave Harvey said police were called to Lone Pine Avenue at 12.10am after reports a car was ablaze.
Inspector Harvey said that when police arrived the Mitsubishi Pajero was well alight.
“The NSW Fire Brigade attended and extinguished the fire,” he said.
“[It] has completely destroyed the vehicle.”
He said police contacted the owner who discovered the vehicle had been stolen from his Orange home.
Sarah Sheargold, who lives near where the car was found, said she came home to see the vehicle well alight.
“I heard one loud bang and then it blew up again,” she said.
Miss Sheargold said she then called fire brigade who were on the scene swiftly.
Inspector Harvey said there was no information to link the incident to a spate of car thefts and fires in Orange last year.
Strike Force Yiddah was established by the Canobolas Proactive and Property Investigation Team to examine the theft of more than 30 vehicles, predominantly Mazda Bravo and Ford Courier older-model utilities.
Four people were arrested following the police operation.
