Victory great Muscat, who has enjoyed A-League premiership success as the club's captain and coach, was booed off by home fans at AAMI Park after his team slumped to their eighth loss of the season and third in as many games.

The competition powerhouse are a whopping 20 points behind leaders Sydney FC - who have a game in hand - and sit in fifth spot on the ladder

Muscat also remains in the dark about his future with the Victory board yet to offer the former Socceroos full-back, whose contract expires at the end of the season, a new deal.

"It's probably not a question for me," Muscat said.

"It's not a focus. I'm comfortable just working tirelessly to make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful."

Despite their season being on the line, Victory were flat and error-prone as they gifted a Brisbane side that had won just three of their last 10 matches a lifeline back into finals contention.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime after goals from Massimo Maccarone and Brett Holman, the hosts did improve after the break, but had only James Troisi's superb strike seven minutes from time to show for their efforts.

"The first half, if we're brutally honest it's nowhere near good enough. Nowhere near acceptable," Muscat said.

"There's no excuse whatsoever for that first half performance.

"And it needs to be addressed."

Muscat refuted suggestions his squad isn't up to the challenge following the departure of Socceroos midfielder Mark Milligan to Saudi Arabia last month.

Carl Valeri and Matias Sanchez struggled to dictate terms against the Roar in middle of the park and Troisi has been out of form, leading to his benching on Friday night.

Record A-League scorer Besart Berisha has also endured a difficult campaign, finding the net just eight times.

Echoing the words of his chairman Anthony Di Pietro at a function last week, Muscat said the whole club would fight together to find a way out of their current malaise.

"We need to take responsibility for our actions," he said.

"I've said to the players, 'don't shirk that responsibility'. Go and watch that first half back.

"That's the mirror, have a look at it."
